Layer Breaker leverages the socio-technical apparatus provided by non-fungible tokens to gather 62 artists from more than 20 countries to create a cadavre exquis of the 21st century with virtually infinite possible combinations. A dynamic, changing piece of artwork like this can only exist because of blockchain technology and Async platform, one that is made by the people, for the people.
The message of Layer Breaker is reflective of the original cryptoart ethos: When the community comes together and works towards a shared goal, then great things can happen. This Async collaboration with its unique programmable components will go forward and become the pure-hearted symbol of community effort when new owners/collectors start actively participating in this story alongside the original artists as they acquire and change its Layers.
Layer Breaker is the record-breaking artist collaboration proposed by artist MightyMoose on February 7th in a tweet towards Async Art. His vision was to enable a mega collaboration to celebrate the NFT community and Async was chosen because of its unique programmable capabilities: NFTs created on this platform can be split into Layers that are able to make visual state changes that alter the entire image (called a Master).
Given the excitement within the community with the initial concept, MightyMoose soon opened a submission form, which was filled and completed with over 60 entries in less than half an hour. After almost 4 months of coordination, Layer Breaker is ready!
Each artist was assigned a 360x360 tile associated with a HEX color code. This methodology enabled a formal cohesion between all the creations, without any further restraints. Each entry can also have their own varying state changes between artists' submitted works as well as a tile of the assigned HEX color and a black tile which will enable owners to create unique designs within the overall piece. There is also a hidden bonus piece behind all these Layers, a bonus backside hidden Layer developed by MattiaC. There are 61 Layers as well as 284 states which will be controlled by future Layer owners to create a seismic landmark in the history of collaborative artworks.
In true collaborative spirit, Async team built new functionalities which enabled the creation of a record-breaking collaboration, made minting more efficient for many-Layered artworks, and spearheaded a feature that allowed each artist to digitally sign with their own Ethereum address. This was of paramount importance to all involved as it reflects a new and certain future for artists and collectors where provenance is easily traceable through the artist's corresponding cryptowallet.
No shortcuts. No simple solutions. This is a labor of love for art to showcase innovation towards what a new and inclusive art community can be. Save the date and enjoy Layer Breaker on Async starting today!
